Temporary Dentistry

Temporary Dentistry treatments abroad

Temporary dentistry includes a number of different dental procedures that are designed to provide a temporary solution to a dental medical problem that will be addressed permanently in the near future. The more teeth are being prepared or the more radical the procedure is anticipated to be, the more necessary temporary work may be. The length of time temporaries may need to be worn depends on how significant the work will be. A few days may be necessary for a single crown, but extensive full-mouth reconstructions may require "provisionals" for several months.

Dentists will use "temporaries" or "temporary dressings" for a number of purposes, such as protecting teeth that are prepared for restorative work or preventing relocated teeth from moving while a permanent implant is prepared. They may also be used to protect teeth where dentin has been removed from becoming too sensitive or uncomfortable. Temporary dressings also allow patients to test the look, function, and comfort of some restoration procedures before the permanent solution is in place so that they can be sure they will be satisfied with the results.

That way, any concerns or problems can be addressed ahead of time and expensive revision procedures can be avoided. Modifying temporary restorations made of acrylic resin is much easier than modifying permanent metal or ceramic restorations, therefore major aesthetic or occlusal (related to the patient's bite) changes can be tested with temporary materials before the permanent implant is created. Temporaries may be avoided if the dentist uses chairside manufacturing technology which allows them to create restorations in their office. It also may not be necessary for some "minimal-prep" procedures, such as Lumineers.
