Cornea Transplant

Cornea Transplant abroad

Cornea is the transparent part of the eye that covers the iris, pupil and anterior chamber. It is responsible for refracting the light to enable us to see. Cornea is made up of 5 different layers, each performing a unique function such as absorbing nutrients and oxygen from tears & preventing any foreign object from entering the eye. It thus protects the parts of eye from being damaged due to minor abrasions. Deeper abrasions can cause scarring in the cornea, which leads it to losing its transparency. With a damaged cornea, the eye can no longer refract or bend the light, causing difficulty in seeing.

To treat the damaged cornea, and to bring back the eyesight, Cornea Transplant may be performed. Cornea Transplant is a procedure through which the surgeon removes the disease or damaged corneal tissue and replaces it with a healthy one. The healthy corneal tissue is donated by deceased human donors. The transplant can restore clear vision, helping the patient improve their quality of life.

A transplant is also useful to treat corneal conditions of ulcers, complications of previous eye surgery, swelling or clouding of the cornea, and bulging out of the cornea. Before the procedure, it is essential to find a donor cornea. Nowadays, finding a donor cornea is not a difficult task as many specifically request that their corneas be donated after death. However, deceased patients who suffered nervous system conditions, infections, and prior eye surgery or eye problems cannot donate corneas.

About Cornea Transplant

A cornea transplant is a surgical procedure performed to remove a damaged cornea and replace it with a healthy donor cornea. The cornea is a protective layer on the eye that may be fully or partially removed, depending on the extent of the damage. The surgery is performed to repair the damage or restore vision to a damaged or diseased cornea. The patient is administered with a local anesthetic, however, in some cases, patients may also be sedated.

In some countries, there may be a shortage of donor corneas, as they can only be taken from registered organ donors. Recommended for Keratoconus Damaged cornea Thinning cornea Corneal perforation Degenerative conditions

Time requirements Number of days in hospital 1 - 2 days. Generally, patients are able to leave the same day. The average length of stay abroad 1 - 2 weeks. The cornea is the outer lens of the eye which refracts light.

Before Procedure / Treatment

Before the procedure, the doctor will examine the eyes to check that they are in healthy condition and that the patient is a good candidate for the procedure.

During the exam, the doctor will also assess if the eyes are sufficiently moist, and the curvature of the eyes will be mapped.

The cornea used for the transplant is taken from a deceased donor with healthy corneas.,

How it Performed?

The patient is administered with a local anesthetic and in some cases may be administered with sedation. The eye is held open using an eyelid speculum so that the surgeon can gain access to the cornea. This may cause eye dryness, therefore the surgeon will usually apply lubricant to the eye to keep it moist. The part of the cornea that is damaged is cut away and the cornea graft is put into place and secured with sutures.

Some procedures involve replacing part of the cornea, such as removing the inner layer of the cornea or removing the surface layer. Both procedures involve removing the damage layer and replacing this with a donor graft. Anesthesia Local anesthetic or local anesthetic with sedation. Procedure duration The Cornea Transplant takes 1 to 2 hours. The damaged cornea is removed and replaced with a donor cornea.,

Post procedure care Patients who undergo a partial cornea transplant may be discharged on the same day, however, a full cornea transplant can require 1 to 2 days in hospital. The eye may be covered with a pad at first and when it is removed, vision may be blurry for several days.

Patients should avoid rubbing the eye, exercise, or heavy lifting for at least one week after the surgery and avoid getting water in the eye for one month. If the eyes are sensitive to light, sunglasses can help with sensitivity.

It is recommended to avoid smoky or dusty environments which could irritate the eye. Possible discomfort Patients may feel a temporary burning or itching sensation in the treated eye.,
