Spinal Tumor Removal

A spinal tumor is a tumor that is present as an abnormal growth within the spinal cord or the outer covering of the spinal cord. Although spinal tumors are less common and if you have back pain that is the most common symptom of spinal tumor, one would not think about having a spinal tumor in the first place so it is important to contact your doctor to rule out the condition as early as possible.

Due to the availability of advanced imaging techniques, spinal tumors are usually diagnosed early in the present scenario. Spine tumors are noncancerous or cancerous and they either originate directly in the spine or spread from some other site to the spine.

Spine tumors are presented as a sharp pain in the back area at the site of the tumor area, the pain usually worsens at night, difficulty in walking, weakness in the muscle. Early diagnosis is the key to get early treatment if the back pain is sharp and severe, continuous, and of longer duration. Along with that if there is muscle weakness in legs and numbness you must consult your doctor immediately.

About Spinal Tumor Removal

Spinal tumor treatment is planned based on the site and severity of the tumor. Your doctor would do your physical examination and would access your other medical conditions. You would also be advised to get done radiological tests like X-ray, CT scan, MRI scan to make confirm the diagnosis, to rule out the size and location of the tumor, and to plan treatment accordingly.

In some cases, if the tumor is felt cancerous, a biopsy is done to confirm the diagnosis and to access the type of cancer thus planning the treatment for the same.

Before Procedure / Treatment

It requires a team of doctors to decide the treatment plan depending on the diagnosis of the tumor. The treatment might range from chemotherapy, radiotherapy to surgery. The doctor would advise you to control your co-morbidities by taking a good diet, medications on time and maintain your overall health.

Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy

  • This is the nonsurgical approach for asymptomatic or mild cases of spinal tumors. Your doctor would keep a check on the size of your tumor and if it is not progressing by regular scanning radiologically.

Corticosteroids and pain-reducing medications

  • These are prescribed to provide relief from the pain and inflammation caused by the spinal tumor.

Surgery

  • Surgery is planned based on the overall health of the patient and if the tumor is increasing in size and the patient is not relieved from chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
  • Surgery is planned to remove the tumor, depending on the size and type of tumor minimally invasive or extensive surgery is planned.
  • If the tumor is not removed completely, post-surgery Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy is done or both as per the requirement.
  • The patient is explained about the benefits, risks, or complications before planning any treatment.

Recovery

If you have good overall health, your road towards recovery is faster. It might take few weeks to months depending on the type of treatment.

Physical therapy is advised, to strengthen the upper and lower extremities.

Occupational therapy would help you to start your daily activities like walking, going to the bathroom slowly and steadily on your own.
