What is esophageal cancer?

The esophagus is a tube-shaped section of tissue and muscle which acts as a funnel between the throat and the stomach. It allows food and liquid to travel from the mouth into the stomach is made up of a number of layers. The main two layers are the mucosa, or inner layer, and the submucosa, which is a muscular outer layer. This happens when acid produced in the stomach to digest food is pushed into the lower esophagus due to a reflux, which causes the squamous cells to be replaced by gland cells and potentially form adenocarcinomas. Other lifestyle factors may also be risk factors, such as diet and obesity.

Esophageal cancer carries a number of early symptoms such as difficulty swallowing (without improvement over time), chest pain, unexplained weight loss and chronic cough.
