Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deviation of the spine. It is quite a common condition. In fact, 2-3% of Americans at the age of 16 already show signs of scoliosis and girls are more likely to be affected than boys. Scoliosis can be either classified as congenital (the vertebral malformation is already present at birth), neuromuscular (this can happen as a result of abnormal muscles or nerves, frequently seen in people affected by spina bifida, cerebral palsy or paralysis), degenerative (caused from a traumatic bone collapse, previous back surgery, or osteoporosis) and idiopathic.

The rarer forms of scoliosis can lead to complications such as heart and lung problems. Scoliosis is a lifelong condition; management of the condition includes treatments such as bracing, physical therapy (in adulthood the patient will need to do specific exercises in order to manage the pain along with a medication therapy), and surgery. Idiopathic scoliosis can be defined as the most common type of scoliosis and has no specific identifiable cause, however it could be inherited. This type of scoliosis is most commonly a condition of adolescence affecting patients from 10 to 16 years old, and it can also heal after the growth spurt is over.

The most common scoliosis symptoms include uneven shoulders, a very visible shoulder blade, uneven waist, or leaning to one side. In order to determine the scoliosis type and to evaluate the spinal curve entity, several bone exams and an X-ray to the back are performed. Adolescents that present a significant scoliosis with no known cause are observed at regular intervals of four months.

These exams include a physical exam and a low-radiation X-ray. Treatments for scoliosis include braces and spinal surgery. Braces are considered to be the best treatment for those adolescents that have a spinal curve between 25 degrees to 40 degrees and have at least 2 years of growth remaining. Braces are a temporary correction but most of the time the curve assumes the original magnitude when braces are eliminated. In adolescents that have a spine curve from 40 to 50 degrees, surgery starts to be an option.

Unfortunately, the surgical procedure is performed to make sure the disease is not getting worse, as cannot perfectly straighten the spine. During the surgery metallic implants are inserted in the spine in order to correct some angles of the curvature, then a bone graft is placed to consolidate a rigid fusion where the curve happens. The scoliosis surgery which requires vertebrae to join together permanently is called spinal fusion.
