What is Hair Transplant?

Hair is one of the first and important aspects which enhance the personality of the person. But nowadays, increasing problem of hair loss due to environmental and other chemical factors in men and women is the reason for hair transplant. About 60 percent of men and 50 percent of women experience some form of hair loss around the world.

Hair transplant is a surgical treatment where hair is removed from thicker parts of the scalp and grafting it to the thinning or balding section of the scalp in recipient. The first transplant was performed in 1939 in Japan. Hair transplant procedures have become successful because of technological advancement. Surgeons use mini and micro-grafts to reduce the appearance of transplanted hair on the scalp. There is no difference between the existing hair on the scalp and that one which grows after a hair transplant procedure.

The cost of hair transplant in India is very less so it is preferable to get hair transplant done if you have too much hair fall problems.

Hair Transplant Techniques

There are 3 main technique of hair transplant which help to restore hair follicles and they are as follows:-

  1. FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction):

It is a minimally invasive hair transplant process where the hair follicles are cut directly from the backside of the head through thousands of small and secured punch incisions. Then the extracted follicles are placed in small holes made with blade or special needle. The area is covered with bandages to stimulate quick healing. This procedure allows the surgeon to extract almost 5000 hair follicles in one sitting.

  1. FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)/ Strip Harvesting:

FUT (Follicular unit Transplantation) procedure, also known as strip harvesting is addresses problem of thinning hair. But, hair loss caused by medication, stress or medical treatment cannot be addressed by strip harvesting. In the FUT procedure, the surgeon will identify a long area at the back of the head. This area should have good hair growth for a few inches long. The surgeon will then use a scalpel-like tool to remove a long (inches) of scalp skin at a single go. The area from where the skin graft is obtained is then closed by the procedure of stitching. The hair transplant surgeon will then cut up these long skin grafts into very small pieces with the help of a magnifying glass and a scalpel. The micrografts that have been dissected from the donor area are then carefully placed in these tiny incisions or These sections will then individually be implanted at the place where the hair is supposed to grow. This procedure leaves behind a linear scar, but its visibility can be reduced by the use of different cosmetic treatments. In two and a half to three months, the new hair will start growing in, and will grow at the normal rate of one-half to one inch per month thereafter

  1. Robotic Hair Transplant:

The new and advanced Robotic Hair Transplant system is the ARTAS Robotic System which automates the process of follicular unit extraction (FUE) and allows unmatched precision in performing successful Hair Transplant. The ARTAS robotic system is comprised of a robotic limb with hair extraction and site creation tools attached to it, a video imaging system and a specialized computer user interface (control panel). The extraction unit has a double-punch system with an inner sharp punch and an outer dull punch. The process is performed using advanced image-guidance technology which allows for microscopic precision in extraction and preparing the recipient site. The advantages of the technique include:

  • Higher accuracy for harvesting the graft hair.
  • Better quality of the harvested follicular units.
  • Decreased harvesting time for hair follicular units.
  • Computerized detection of dense hair follicle units helps to maximize efficiency as well as reduce risk of wounding the scalp.
  • Side of the scalp provides for easier extraction of hair follicles.
  • Easier hair extraction for patients with differing racial background or a typical hair type.
  • Increased accuracy and speed of preparing the recipient site.

Are Hair Transplants Only For The Head?

No, hair transplants are not only for head. There are other areas of body where hair transplant can be performed, so the other types of hair transplant are:-

  1. Facial Hair Transplant

A facial hair transplant generally deals with restoring hair in the facial regions. Facial hair transplant procedures require extra experience since they differ from scalp hair transplants. During the procedure, the skin (intended facial region) is incised to receive individual hair follicles from the back of the scalp. Normally, the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique is used, but in other cases, the FUT or strip approach can be utilized.

Causes of Facial Hair Loss

  1. Medications= You may lose your hair in case you previously underwent or currently undergoing cancer treatment, like chemotherapy and radiation.
  2. Certain Hair Loss Types= Patients who suffer from alopecia areata or traction alopecia have higher incidences of experiencing facial hair loss.
  • Trauma= Loss of a loved one, accidents, or prolonged stress can also trigger facial hair loss.
  1. Previous Hair transplant Surgeries= You may also get patchy beards in case the hair was previously extracted for a scalp hair transplant.
  2. Scars= Any form of scar from an accident or injuries and even poor shaving approaches.

Actually Chest / Pubic etc Hair Transplant in India is very common keyword and it means hair surgery for those people who have less donor area which at the back of the head and surgeon can take hair from that area. When surgeon can take hair from the body parts like pubic hair, chest, under arms and even from legs and then we can transplant them into the bald region of our head this is called the Body Chest / Pubic etc Hair Transplant. But mind one thing Chest / Pubic etc Hair Transplant is possible in case of FUE hair transplant only because this one is one of the best technology through which we can go for Chest / Pubic etc Hair Transplant.

Can Women Undergo Hair Transplant?

Yes women can also undergo hair transplant. Hair loss is very distressing in women because it is a source of beauty. It is a procedure where hair is extracted from the donor area and implanted into the small incisions made in the recipient area on the scalp with two techniques, i.e. FUT and FUE. The hair transplant technique is selected depending on the type of hair loss that a woman is affected by.

It is also important to note that women highly go in for facial hair restoration for example eyebrows and eyelashes. Some of the types of hair loss in women are:

  1. Female pattern baldness
  2. Traction Alopecia
  3. Alopecia that develops after a trauma or a surgery and
  4. Scarring Alopecia

How Long Does The Hair Growth Take?

The recovery involves letting the site of the hair transplant and the site of the origin of the follicles heal. These are wrapped in protective bandages by the doctors after the procedure. The doctor will tell the patient to come on a particular day to get the bandages removed so that the evaluation of the condition of the hair transplant can be done. The doctor will also prescribe some pain killers to relieve any pain after the hair transplant procedure. Antibiotics will also be prescribed so that the sites of transplant and the origin site do not get any type of infection.

Most people are able to return to work 2 to 5 days after the operation. Within 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, the transplanted hair will fall out, but you should start to notice new growth within a few months. Most people will see 60% of new hair growth after 6 to 9 months.

How To Choose A Hair Transplant Surgeon

There are number of different factors that need to be considered while choosing a Hair Transplant surgeon which are as follows:-

  • Whether they specialize in hair restoration
  • How long they’ve been in practice
  • How many hair transplant procedures they’ve performed
  • What board certifications/credentials they have
  • Before/after pictures of actual patients

Precautions to be taken

Precautions to observe before hair transplant surgery

  • One week before the hair transplant procedure, stop taking the certain medication as they may increase bleeding during the procedure. You can resume taking them 2 days after the procedure.
  • You should abstain from smoking at least one week before the procedure.
  • Inform the doctor of any medication or any health conditions that may affect the surgery such as allergies, bleeding disorders, sleep disorders, asthma, high blood pressure, breathing problems, diabetes, psoriasis, a history of keloids or any other chronic diseases.
  • Ask the doctor before you take any prescribed drugs 1 day before the hair transplant. If you are taking finasteride or Propecia, you can continue with your dosage as usual. Minoxidil or Rogaine should be stopped 1 day before the procedure then resumed after 2 weeks.
  • You do not have to shave your hair before you come.
  • Consider an extremely experienced surgeon for the procedure.

Precautions to observe after hair transplant surgery

  • Wait a few days after the surgery to wash your hair. Only use mild shampoos for the first few weeks.
  • Don’t press a brush or comb down over the new grafts for about 3 weeks.
  • Don’t wear any hats or pullover shirts and jackets until your doctor say it’s OK.
  • Don’t exercise for about a week.

Keep the facial regions clean and protected from environmental factors such as pollution and chemicals.

How Much Does It Cost In India?

Overall cost of Hair Transplant in India largely depends on multiple factors such as:-

  • Area of the Transplant: The area where you want to get the hair transplant done plays an important role. Usually, the basic cost of a regular hair transplant is lower than the cost of a facial or body hair transplant.
  • Number of Grafts: This is the most important factor which will decide the cost of the treatment. More the number of grafts required, more you will have to pay for the treatment. However, the total number of graft required is also decided by the quality of the hair present in the back of the scalp. If the hair is thin and silky, then you will require more number of grafts to cover the area.
  • Number of Sessions: If the requirement of the graft is more then the number of the sessions also increases, which will automatically increase your cost.
  • Health of the patient: . Even your health will play a major role when you undergo the hair transplant. If your Blood Pressure or Sugar fluctuate during the procedure then the surgeon will stop the procedure keeping your safety in mind and continue it on the next day. Due to this, the patient might need two sessions to complete the procedure. Because of this, the overall cost of procedure increases.
  • Experience of the Surgeon: The success rate of the procedure majorly depends upon the experience of the surgeon. So naturally, more the experience of the surgeon the more he/she will charge for the treatment.
  • Type of Techniques: FUE is an advanced hair transplant technique; its cost is always more elevated than the FUT technique. If the requirement of the grafts is high, then you might need to combine two types of technique, which eventually increases the cost of the procedure.
  • Cost of Medical Equipment: Even the cost of the equipment used during the procedure plays an important role while deciding the price of the treatment. Some of the technique requires special tools, which can increase the cost of the treatment. For E.g. DHI technique requires the use of DHI Implanter, which is a tool that can be used for a single procedure only.
  • Labor Cost: Highly skilled and experienced staff does not come cheap. The presence of good staff is very crucial in the success rate of the procedure.
  • The extent of baldness: Normally grade III & IV require less grafts and so has to spend less cash on extraction and their implantation. Any baldness level beyond this level automatically increases the cost than the normal.
  • Means of extraction: The Robotic way of extraction is an advanced procedure where hair grafts are extracted by a robot. This is done in more advanced clinics since the technology is extremely expensive and requires large expertise.

The Cost As Per The Type Of Hair Transplant Technique

      • FUE HAIR TRANSPLANT COST

FUE Hair transplantation cost in India for this type of surgery is very affordable, and even if multiple sittings are required, the cost will still be less expensive when you look at the benefits of this type of transplantation. The cost of FUE hair transplant ranges between Rs.50,000 to Rs. 2,00,000 depending upon the number of grafts used.

      • FUT HAIR TRANSPLANT COST

The follicular unit Transplantation is also known as the strip method and the hair follicles are extracted in the form of a strip. The strip is dissected to achieve individual hair follicles, which are implanted into the tiny incisions in the bald region. The cost of FUT hair transplant ranges between Rs.35,000 to Rs. 85,000 depending upon the number of grafts used.

      • BODY HAIR TRANSPLANT COST

Body hair transplant is a procedure performed using the FUE technique. During the session, hair follicles are extracted from the body to the scalp or from the scalp to the facial regions to correct the eyelashes, eyebrows, mustache or achieve a fuller beard. The cost of body hair transplant normally goes between RS.50, 000 to RS.80, 000 depending on the region to be worked upon.

      • ROBOTIC HAIR TRANSPLANT COST

A robotic hair transplant is simply a procedure performed by a robot. In some clinics, the robot only extracts hair follicles under the observation of the surgeon whereas in others, the robot will extract the hair follicles and as well implant them. Since it is an advanced procedure aimed at achieving perfect results, one must expect to spend more than 1 lakh to get this particular procedure

What Drugs Are Available For Treatment Of Baldness?

    • Medications are available to treat pattern (hereditary) baldness which are as follows:-

      • Minoxidil (Rogaine)= This has some disadvantages of possible side effects of scalp irritation and unwanted hair growth on the adjacent skin of the face and hands.
      • Finasteride (Propecia)= This is a prescription drug for men. Disadvantages are the rare side effects of finasteride which include diminished sex drive and sexual function and an increased risk of prostate cancer.

Non- Surgical methods of hair transplantation

      • Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment intended to correct hormonal imbalances that develop for both middle-aged women and men during menopause and andropause respectively. Estrogen plays a large role in female hair growth, and expecting mothers experience a noticeable and enviable increase in hair density and thickness due to the higher production of estrogen during pregnancy. Using HRT, women can increase their estrogen and progesterone levels with prescription pills or creams to produce thicker, more youthful hair.

      • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

PRP Therapy utilizes the abundance of growth factors and hair-thickening nutrients present in the patient’s own plasma to rejuvenate aging follicles. When used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes hair loss medication, PRP Therapy can combat thinning hair and fight androgenetic alopecia.

      • Low-level laser therapy (LLLT)

LLLT is a relatively new hair restoration procedure that warms the scalp using red laser light to increase blood flow and nutrients in the treated area. With the LaserCap LCPRO, patients can take their hair restoration treatments home with them for ease and simplicity of use. Wearing the LaserCap for 30 minutes at a time three days per week has been shown to promote hair growth without the need for invasive or uncomfortable procedures. LLLT is especially beneficial for patients who are not candidates for hair transplantation surgery or would like to stay at the forefront of hair restoration treatments.

      Complications of Hair Transplant

Side effects from a hair transplant are usually minor and clear up within a few weeks.

      They can include:

      • Bleeding
      • Infection
      • swelling of the scalp
      • bruising around the eyes
      • a crust that forms on the areas of the scalp where hair was removed or implanted
      • numbness or lack of sensation on the treated areas of the scalp
      • itching
      • inflammation or infection of the hair follicles, which is known as folliculitis
      • shock loss, or sudden but typically temporary loss of the transplanted hair
      • unnatural-looking tufts of hair

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

      • Who is the best candidate for hair transplant?

      Ans.  The best candidate is:-

      • While there are no limits to what age one can get a hair transplant procedure, an ideal candidate is between 25- 65 years of age. Patients younger than 25 are still experiencing premature hair loss, something that might change once they grow older.
      • As not all types of hair loss are the same, the best candidates for hair transplantation are those who suffer from pattern baldness.
      • There are two important factors when assessing the amount of hair loss- severity of hair loss and quality and quantity of donor hair. This is an important step in deciding if a patient qualifies for hair transplantation, since there must be a good supply of healthy hair follicles available for hair transplantation to be successful.

In these cases, the doctors typically recommend waiting around 12 months in between the sessions.

      • How long does the operation take?

Ans.  You can expect a hair transplant to take between four and eight hours. If you are having a large amount of hair transplanted, you may need to return for a few hours the next day.
