Immunity & Anti-Bodies

Immunity is the ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells. The immune system through the production of white blood cells, and several antibodies acts as a defence mechanism against foreign bodies or infections.

The development of immunity to a pathogen through natural infection is a multi-step process. With research and clinical trials being carried out around the world, and till no cure is discovered, communities throughout the world look for ways to minimize the risk of COVID-19. The governments have published guidance on adjusting public health and social measures for different phases or covid-19 response. These include certain methods to improve your immunity which is paramount at this juncture:

Follow A Healthy Diet

You are what you eat. Diet plays a key role in determining the health of a person. People eating a balanced diet are more immune to infections. Whereas, individuals that incorporate nutrient-lacking eating patterns are exposed to great risk. To boost immunity, taking medicines or supplements is not necessary. Health experts encourage consumers to eat nutrient-dense foods which are available at home and can help with the goal of boosting immunity:

  • Incorporate citrus fruits in the diet. Citrus fruits contain concentrated vitamin C which is a natural immunity booster. 
  • Increase the intake of vitamin A, E, and Beta-Carotene antioxidant via green vegetables, dry fruits and fresh fruits.
  • Consuming foods rich in zinc such as nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, beans, and lentils help boost white blood cells.
  • Drink enough warm water throughout the day. Warm honey water or green tea, which is rich in antioxidants can also be consumed.


These are testing times, and a prolonged period of staying indoors has its implications on your mental well being.  While the uncertainty might be overwhelming, there are few steps we can follow regularly to help relieve our stress, stress is known to have an adverse effect on immunity.

  • Do no compromise your sleep. A routine of 6-8 hours of sleep is very essential for an active mind and body. The lack of sleep will prevent the body from resting and this will impair other bodily functions that will have a direct impact on your immunity. 
  • Practice yoga and meditation. These are proven to be the most effective ways to relieve stress. They not only help calm mind but also act as immunity boosters.
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol and other addictive substances. Habits of smoking, vaping, alcohol consumption and other substances affects the respiratory system. This causes the individual to have weakened immune system and more susceptible to infection.

A healthy diet and destress routine accompanied by preventive protocols of hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, and remaining indoors can limit our exposure to the virus. 

It is also essential for us to keep track of authenticity of the products. With multiple products acting as immunity boosters, it is important to keep in mind that not all products are authentic. Some may even have a detrimental effect due to the falsehood of their ingredients. Consuming foods made available by verified and reliable sources should be encouraged.
