Frenectomy

Frenectomy treatments abroad

A Frenectomy is the removal of a small piece of muscular tissue connecting two pieces of tissue called a frenum. It's most commonly done inside the mouth, either removing a frenum from under the tongue or behind the upper lip. Sometimes the frenum under the tongue is too long and runs too far along the length of the tongue, restricting the full range of motion for the tongue. A lingual frenectomy is where an orthodontist or oral surgeon cuts the frenectomy away, freeing the tongue from the bottom of the mouth, and then closes the wound. Lingual frenectomies may also be done to improve the fit of dentures. A maxillary labial frenectomy is where the frenum behind the upper lip is removed in a similar fashion.

This might be necessary if the prominent maxillary labial frenum is causing a gap in between the two front teeth. The gap can be corrected by braces, but if the teeth move apart again a frenectomy might be the only permanentually performed under local anesthetic, so the patient is awake and alert for the procedure but the area is numb and they feel no pain. This is a relatively simple procedure, and usually takes as little as 10 to 15 minutes. The procedure can be done using laser technology, which results in less bleeding and less risk. The surgeon will make a decision as to what technology is best to use.
