Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

Bone mineral density test is the process in which the density of the bones is measured by using x-rays. The bone mineral density test measures the amounts of minerals such as calcium in the bones. The bone mineral density test is crucial for people who are at risk of osteoporosis, which can be mostly seen in women and older people.
Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone diseases, it is mainly caused when the bone tissue becomes thin, and frail which eventually leads to several fractures.
The bone mineral density test uses X-rays however, the radiation levels of the test are very low. Doctors admit that the risk posed by this radiation exposure is far lower than the risk of not detecting osteoporosis before the patient gets a bone fracture.
However, it is important to tell the doctor if the patient is pregnant as the X-ray radiation could harm the fetus.

About Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

The bone mineral density test is usually ordered by the doctors if they have suspected that the bones of the patient are becoming weaker. Another reason why the doctors suggest bone mineral density test are:

  • The patient might have reached the age where screening is necessary
  • If the patient is showing the symptoms of osteoporosis

The National Insitute of Health recommends that the following people should get a bone mineral density test in order to prevent any kind of bone diseases:

  • All women over the age of 65
  • Women under the age of 65 who have a high risk of fractures
  • People who have chronic kidney disease
  • Women who are experiencing early menopause
  • People with an eating disorder which results in low body weight
  • People who have a family history of osteoporosis
  • A “fragility fracture” (a broken bone caused by regular activities)
  • Patients who have a history of rheumatoid arthritis
  • People who are experiencing significant height loss (a sign of compression fractures in the spinal column)
  • People who have a sedentary lifestyle that includes minimal weight-bearing activities

Before Procedure / Treatment

The bone mineral density test requires little to no preparation. For most of the bone scans and tests, the patient doesn’t even need to change out of their clothes. However, they should avoid wearing clothes that contain buttons, snaps, or zippers because metal can interfere with x-ray images and alter the results.
