Abdominal Ultrasound

Ultrasound scans use sound waves of high frequency in order to capture images and video of the inside of the body of the patient. Abdominal ultrasounds help the doctor to see and diagnose the organs and structures inside of the abdomen. Abdominal ultrasounds are completely safe and painless. Abdominal ultrasounds are also more common.
The images and videos of the abdominal ultrasound are captured in real-time. They not only show the structures of the movement of the internal organs but also the images of the blood flowing through the blood vessels. This test is the most commonly practiced one to view and examine the fetus in pregnant women, however it has many other clinical uses as well.

Before Procedure / Treatment

Before taking the abdominal ultrasound the patient is required to fast for at least 8-12 hours, as the undigested food in the stomach blocks the sound waves and there can be difficulty in getting the precise images from the procedure.  However, there is an exception to fasting if the patient is having an ultrasound of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen.

How it Performed?

The whole procedure of Abdominal ultrasound takes about 30 minutes. Prior to the abdominal ultrasound, the patient is asked to change into a hospital gown and remove any kind of accessories that can interfere with the images of the scan. Then the patient is said to lie down on the examination table with their abdominal area exposed. The sonographer will apply a special lubricating gel on the abdomen of the patient. This lubricating gel is used to prevent any kinds of air pockets formed between the skin and the ultrasound transducer.
This transducer sends high-frequency sound waves through the patient's body, these waves are too high pitched to be audible for a bare human ear. However, the waves echo if it hits any object inside the abdomen such as a tumor, stones, or a baby.
Though this process is not painful, the patient might feel slight discomfort during the ultrasound if they are having any pain in the abdominal area, it is important to tell the technician right away if the severity of the pain increases.
Some certain factors or conditions might interfere with the results of the abdominal ultrasound, such as:

  • severe obesity
  • food inside the stomach
  • barium leftover in the intestines from a previous barium procedure
  • excess intestinal gas

When the scan is completed, the technician will clean the gel off the patients' abdomen.
