Overview

Cancer and cancer treatment both may or may not cause pain. Bearing pain can be an unavoidable part of cancer treatment and cancer itself.

Pain as a side effect of cancer is an unpleasant experience caused due to damage to the nerves and tissues.

Pain-related to cancer

Pain can affect the immune system, cause sleep disturbance, affect the mood and part of an individual’s life. Pain management is an important part of the cancer treatment plan.

Pain affects day to day activities of a cancer patient. A cancer patient undergoing chemotherapy or other cancer treatment may easily get sad, angry, and frustrated. The close and near ones may not always understand the person, as a result, he/she might feel lonely.

Cause of pain in cancer patients

Cancer itself or cancer treatment can cause pain in cancer patients. Cancer, tumors, and treatment such as surgical removal of tumors, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and certain diagnostic procedures may cause pain in cancer patients.

Cancer pain is commonly observed in young cancer patients when compared to older patients. The severity of pain depends upon the stages of cancer, as advanced cancer is associated with severe pain. The pain may occur during the treatment and also continue after the treatment is over.

Pain may last up to six months or beyond six months. Pain lasting for more than 6 months can cause depression and tiredness.

Pain differs depending on the type of cancer treatment

Based on the treatment plan there are different types of pain related to cancer.

  • Post-treatment pain
  • Intravenous chemotherapy causes spasm, pain, and itching
  • Chemotherapy or targeted therapy causes pain in the mouth
  • Pain in the bones may result from filgrastim treatment
  • Pain due to peripheral neuropathy is a result of chemotherapy or targeted therapy
  • Pain due to radiation therapy can occur from dermatitis, pain flares, mucositis, brachytherapy, etc.

Ways to manage pain

Keep a record of the occurrence of pain due to any reason. This will help your doctor diagnose the cause of pain. Keep a journal of the following things related to pain –

  1. Note when the pain starts
  2. Nature of the pain
  3. Site of pain
  4. Intensity of pain
  5. Pain duration
  6. Factors that relieves pain
  7. Characteristic of pain
  8. Effect of mood on pain

Your doctor may recommend X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and other diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Most of the pain related to cancer can be controlled and managed. Cancer pain and cancer treatment pain cannot be completely relieved, however, there are ways to manage the severity of pain. Pain management improves the quality of life during and after the treatment.
