There is a hole between the chambers with certain defect in the valves. As a result there is not a proper blood flow in the heart.

Surgery is recommended as a treatment of atrioventricular septal defect. Complete or partial atrioventricular septal defect is corrected by surgical procedure. In some cases one may need more than one surgery.

Surgery to repair atrioventricular septal defect may last 4- 6 hours.

Atrioventricular septal defect is diagnosed during pregnancy or when the baby is born.

Medication includes management of congestive heart failure with medicines such as diuretics and vasodilator.

  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Echocardiogram

Long-term survival of complete AVSD patients after surgery is reported to be 88% at 5 years, 82% or 91.3% at 10 years, and 75.9% at 15 years. Because of our higher early mortality, our long-term survival of complete AVSD patients is 74% after 5, 10 and 15 years. For partial AVSD patients, a survival of 93% at years and 87% at 20 years. This is comparable to our results with a survival of partial AVSD patients of 93% after 10 and 15 years.
