About Wilms' Tumor Treatment

Treatment for Wilms’ tumor include –

  • Chemotherapy is done as a common treatment 
  • Surgical removal of the tumor
  • Radiotherapy in some cases 

Stage 1
In this stage tumors are present in the kidney which can be removed surgically. Children less than 2 years old with small tumors need to be monitored after surgical removal of the tumor. 

In children more than 2 years with large tumor, after surgical removal the child usually need chemo for months. Along with it, drugs are also administered.

Stage 2
In this stage tumor grows outside the kidney. Surgical procedure is done to remove the tumor.  

Depending upon the condition following treatment is done –

  • Post-surgery with chemotherapy is done. 
  • Post-surgery radiation therapy is given for couple of weeks followed by chemotherapy.
  • Post-surgery radiation therapy is given for couple of weeks followed by intense chemotherapy.

Stage 3
In this stage surgical procedure is not able to cure the tumor. In some, surgery may be postponed until the tumor decreases in size.

Stage 4
In this stage the tumor spreads to the parts of the body. Surgical removal of the tumor is usually the first line of treatment.

Stage 5
Tumor is present in both the kidneys. There is no standard treatment for a child with tumor in both the kidneys. Treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
