Gingivectomy treatments abroad
What is a Gingivectomy?
A gingivectomy is a procedure related to the removal of gum tissue. This might be done because gum tissue has grown too far down the tooth or because a pocket has formed between the gum tissue and tooth so that particles become trapped within and it becomes difficult to keep the teeth clean. This is normally done after a thorough teeth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from the mouth, which will help prevent infection. A gingivectomy may be recommended to improve oral health, to relieve discomfort when speaking or chewing from overgrown gums, or to improve aesthetic appearance.
This type of oral surgery is usually performed under local anesthetic, so the patient is awake and alert for the procedure, but the area is numb. The excess gum tissue is removed, usually using a scalpel or laser. A periodontal dressing is then placed over the affected area, which is like modelling clay that sticks to the mouth. The dressing can be removed after about a week. The area will look normal in about 3 to 4 weeks, but could take up to three months to heal completely.
