What is an Astigmatism?

An astigmatism is a common eye problem , in which light entering the eye does not focus to a single point on the retina, causing vision to blur. An astigmatism is normally the result of the cornea having an irregular shape. This is caused by the eye having a slightly squashed rather than spherical shape. The more squashed the eye is, the worse the astigmatism tends to be. Astigmatisms are also in part due to internal factors.

This includes fluid, retina, and eye-brain interface optical properties. In some patients the external shape of the cornea contributes most to the astigmatism, whereas in others it is the internal parts of the eye. It is also worth noting that the levels of astigmatism caused by external and internal factors is not always the same, so it is the combination of the two that determine the optical properties of the eye.

What are the Symptoms of an Astigmatism?

Slight astigmatism may be symptomless, and in fact everybody's are not quite perfectly spherical. Moderate to severe cases of astigmatism may display symptoms such as blurred vision, squinting when trying to focus, eye strain, fatigue, and headaches . Research has also show links between astigmatism and migraines .

What are the Types of Astigmatism?

Astigmatisms are defined in various ways. With the eye relaxed, they can be defined based on the focus of the principal meridians. When defined as such, the types of astigmatism are: Simple astigmatism, either hyperopic or myopic. In simple hyperopic astigmatism , the first focal line is on the retina and the second is behind the retina. In simple myopic astigmatism , the first focal line is in front of the retina and the second is on the retina.

Compound astigmatism, either hyperopic or myopic. In compound hyperopic astigmatism both focal lines are behind the retina, in compound myopic astigmatism both focal lines are in front of the retina. Mixed astigmatisms occur where the focal lines are on both sides of the retina. As well as the above classifications, astigmatisms can also be classified as regular or irregular . Regular is where the eye is squashed but the principle axes remain perpendicular, irregular the axes are not perpendicular to each other.

How is Astigmatism Treated?

Depending on the severity of the case and individual patient, astigmatism can be treated non-surgically or surgically. Non-surgical treatments for astigmatism are corrective glasses or contact lenses , of the type and strength determined by an ophthalmologist. Surgical treatment options include refractive eye surgery and laser eye surgery (LASIK) . Again there are various types available, and treatments will be decided on an individual basis.,
